Incremental Marathon Promotes Fun, Fitness

CINCINNATI (November 27, 2007) - The Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon is partnering with the Nutrition Council of Cincinnati to expand its “Flying Pig Kids Marathon” incremental marathon program to area elementary schools. The program, which encourages youngsters, their teachers and parents to run or walk at least a mile each week, teaches good nutrition and exercise while participants finish their ‘marathon’ over the course of several months.

“The schools that already participate in the “Flying Pig” program are thrilled with the results,” said Iris Simpson-Bush, executive director. “It’s a fun way to get the whole school, and entire families, in a regular program of exercise and good nutrition.”

The students receive a chart to mark their progress, and a course map so they can see how many miles they have finished on their ‘marathon.’ Participants then complete their ‘marathon’ by running or walking the final mile at the Cincinnati Flying Pig Kid’s Marathon One Miler event on Saturday, May 3, 2008.

An informational meeting to learn how to implement this fun fitness & nutrition to your school or group will b held on Wednesday December 12, 2008, from 4-5pm at the offices of The Flying Pig Marathon, 644 Linn Street, 3rd Floor Conference Room, Cincinnati OH 45203. If your school or class is interested in participating, please contact the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon at (513) 721-PIGS or Robin Pendery at the Nutrition Council, (513) 621-3262.

The 10th annual Flying Pig Marathon weekend will be Friday, May 2-Sunday, May 4, 2008, featuring the full marathon, Half Marathon presented by National City and Ernst & Young 4-Person Relay, Business Courier CEO Challenge, Toyota 10K, 5K and the Piglet presented by First Watch, The Enquirer and Children’s Hospital. Other events include the National City Expo and Expotique and Duke Energy Pasta “Pig Out” Dinner. Presenting sponsors are Duke Energy, National City, CoActive Marketing Group, Ernst and Young and Paycor.

The Flying Pig Marathon was named one of the top 10 “Most Fun Runs” by Runner’s World magazine, one of the best corporate brands by Fast Company and is listed in The Traveling Marathoner: A Complete Guide To Top U.S. Races and Sightseeing on the Run, by Elise Allen.
