FLYING PIG MARATHON ONE OF NATION'S 'MOST ENJOYABLE'
Runner's World Lists the 'Pig' in Top 10 Most Fun Marathons
Cincinnati, Ohio (December 16, 2005) - The Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon, already one of the top 20 marathons in the country, is now part of an even more elite group with its listing as one of the nation's 10 most enjoyable marathons, according to Runner's World magazine.
In its January 2006 issue, on newsstands now, Runner's World puts the "Pig" in such exclusive company as the Walt Disney World Marathon in Orlando, Boston Marathon, Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in San Diego and the ING New York City Marathon as the most fun for participants.
"The marathon adheres to the 'flying pig' theme down to almost every detail," says Runner's World, "with costumed runners, volunteers known as 'grunts,' 'squealing fans' lining the sidelines and an official race mascot greeting runners at the 'finish swine.'" The article continues, "a carnival-like postrace party awaits runners and their families with food, music, rides, games and face-painting."
"We are so thrilled to be listed with such long-time prestigious marathons as New York and Boston," said Iris Simpson-Bush, executive director of the Marathon. "In only our eighth year, to be honored by such an esteemed running publication as Runner's World, just shows the support that the Greater Cincinnati community gives to us each year."
At a news conference to announce the Runner's World designation, organizers of the Flying Pig Marathon also announced a new "High Endurance Mile to the Finish" award sponsored by Old Spice High Endurance, given to the fastest male and female runners over the final mile of the Marathon. In addition, this year's Health and Fitness Expo will be presented by National City, with a special 'Expo-tique' section devoted to women's health and wellness.
Also, Friday, May 5, will be designated "Wear Your Pig Nose to Work Day" with proceeds from purchased pig noses going toward the Flying Pig Marathon charities. Pig noses will go on sale at designated retail sites after the first of the year.
The eighth annual Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon will be held Sunday, May 7 with the Flying Pig Marathon, Half Marathon presented by National City, the Ernst & Young 4-person relay and the Corporate Express Corporate Challenge Relay. Saturday, May 6 features the Flying Pig 10K, the 5K presented by girls!can and Flying Piglet Fun Run and Family Festival.
