The Pig Raises the Bar Against Waste

This year's Flying Pig Marathon will be one for the ages, as it continues to divert more waste from the landfill. Since 2010, the Pig has nearly doubled the amount recycled each year. Half the event waste from 2012 was either composted or recycled. For 2013, we aim to divert more than 60% of total waste, in order to achieve recertification as a sustainable race event.

The Pig already eliminates waste with its reused signage, donated discarded clothing, and virtual goodie bags for race participants. Mylar blankets are reused as liners in temporary shelters for stray cats, thanks to the Ohio Alleycat Resource. Two Men in a Truck transports unused food from the event to Northern Kentucky food pantries.

New for 2013, the Pig will partner with Terracycle for hard-to-recycle items, such as beverage cups and chip bags. Help the Pig "Go Green" and reach new heights! Work with our Green Team volunteers to waste less at the 15th Anniversary Party, Pasta Dinner, Race Recovery Area and Post Race Party. Find the new recycle containers and other marked bins throughout Pig Weekend!
