A letter from the Executive Director:

May 2010

It’s hard to believe that we have wrapped up another Flying Pig weekend! An event that takes a year to plan, seems to go by in an instant. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the activities that we don’t have a chance to pause and thank those who make the weekend possible. So let me take a moment and express my appreciation to those who make the “Pig” so successful.

First, we want to thank all of you who participated in our weekend events, all 26,000 of you who represent all 50 states and a record 21 countries. We know you have a choice of destination events in which you can participate, and we thank you for choosing ours. Whether it’s your first “Pig” or your 12th, we appreciate your loyalty and your participation, with a special nod to our 115 “Streakers,” who have done all 12 marathons.

We also want to thank the nearly 5,000 volunteers who were involved, from the goodie bag stuffing to the fluid stops the day of the Marathon. We could not do this event without you, and we appreciate your braving the rain to come out and support our participants.

And, of course, our sponsors are the lifeblood of the weekend. The Flying Pig Marathon is powered by P&G, and its family of brands was visible throughout the course, as were the hundreds of P&G employees who participated in the weekend events. Our event sponsors are crucial in our ability to offer a race for any age and ability, and our suppliers make sure you have the best possible experience. We thank all our sponsors for supporting the Pig.

Our community support is unrivaled among events in the Greater Cincinnati area, and we are so grateful for the support of each of the municipalities in which we travel, from the residents who come out and cheer, to the city officials who support us, to police, fire and emergency personnel and our medical team who keep us safe. A special thank you goes to the dozens of churches who line the route and who have to adjust their schedules for the “Pig.” We especially love it when you bring your church choirs outside to give our runners some ‘heavenly inspiration’ as they go by!

Another group that deserves a special nod is our charities, some 150 of them, who use the Marathon as fundraisers for their organizations. One of our main missions is to serve the charities in the community, and we are pleased to help these groups raise, in two of the last three years, more than $1 million collectively for their causes. And a final thank you to the members of our Board of Directors, who not only give us guidance throughout the year as we plan our event, but who work tirelessly throughout the weekend, whether it’s helping at the Expo or shaking hands at the finish line, to make the weekend special.

This year was a record one for the Flying Pig Marathon, and we couldn’t have done it without all of you. From the staff of the Flying Pig Marathon, thank you for taking part, and we hope to see you at the 13th annual Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon weekend powered by P&G, April 29-May 1, 2011.
