Flying Pig Marathon Earns Gold Level Inspire Status from Council for Responsible Sport

The Flying Pig Marathon powered by P&G, celebrating its 20th running in 2018, has earned Gold Level Inspire Certification from the Council for Responsible Sport, an Oregon-based non-profit supporting and promoting sustainability in sports.

Inspire event status is awarded by invitation to events achieving multiple certifications from the Council, to recognize the legacy of their commitment to sustainability and thoughtful resource management.

“We are honored to receive the Gold Level Inspire status from the Council for Responsible Sport,” said Iris Simpson Bush, Flying Pig Marathon executive director. “The award is a credit to our green team volunteers who work throughout the year to make sure all our events are responsible stewards for our communities and for our environment.”

Shelley Villalobos, Managing Director of the Council for Responsible Sport, said, “The Flying Pig’s longstanding commitment to continual performance improvement according to the responsible sport framework places it firmly among a small but growing group of industry leading events that take large action to implement their social and environmental values. This Gold Level Inspire Certification recognizes a legacy of certified responsible performance as well as a willingness to mentor other events interested in becoming more sustainable. Following three consecutive biennial certifications by the group—Certified in 2011, Silver in 2013, and Gold in 2015—I look forward to supporting the work of the Flying Pig Marathon organizers at this new level of engagement for years to come.”

Inspire-certified events are required to provide sustainability metrics and are expected to share their story with fellow event organizers. Inspire event organizers also are asked to mentor other Council-affiliated events on aspects of their responsible sport program. Other Inspire events include the PGA Tour’s Waste Management Phoenix Open, Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run, Scotiabank Vancouver Half Marathon, Eversource Hartford Marathon and Old Bill’s Fun Run for Charities.

The 20th annual Flying Pig Marathon weekend powered by P&G will be held May 4-6, 2018. Follow the Flying Pig Marathon on Facebook and on Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat @runflyingpig.
