After completing the first 25 miles of your “oink”remental marathon, you can be part of the Flying Pig Kids’ Marathon 26th Mile on Saturday, May 6th. This is a special event on Flying Pig marathon weekend where kids and their fitness buddies can cruise to their marathon finish, covering that final marathon mile on the real Flying Pig Marathon course. Participants get all the swag deserving of a marathoner including shirt, medal, and finisher’s treats. Registration is required. Adults can accompany kids but for safety and security of our children, we do ask that they be registered as well.
Get your own herd of pigs flying by becoming an official Flying Pig Kids’ Marathon Team. Parents, teachers, troop leaders, youth program coordinators, or adults who want to give kids a terrific opportunity to be part of The Flying Pig Marathon and begin a lifetime of good health can lead a program. We will give you all the support and resources you need.
Contact Taylor Conklin or Robin Pendery at email@example.com to get your Flying Pig Kids Marathon Flight Plan.
Children do not have to be part of a group to participate in the Kids’ Marathon 26th Mile. This is a special 1 mile event to celebrate the weeks of training, one mile at a time, of a full marathon (26.2 miles). The program is intended as an incremental marathon program to show kids the values associated with training for a marathon and accomplishing a goal. We recommend downloading our Hog Log to share with your kids in the weeks leading up to the event. It’s a great way to start a family fitness plan and keep your child active. Normally this program is intended for grades K-6th but we welcome all ages and abilities.
In the last few years, we have reached about 4,000 kids per year that are participating in the program with their schools, sports teams or youth groups. All of the organized groups are assigned to one of five separate start waves. We stagger the waves 8 minutes apart to help make it safer and smoother. If your child is not part of a group, we recommend letting the first couple waves go off before them so that they can see how it works and seed themselves in one of the later wave starts. Please note that the finish line is secure only for participants. If you want to accompany your child during the event, please register as a participant.
If you are planning on just being a spectator while your child participates, then you will need to arrange a meeting place at the Finish Line with them. We recommend the large, red Paddle Wheel Monument near the Finish Line exit. We also ask that all children fill out the back of their bib with a cell phone contact. Please make sure your family has a plan to meet at a set location after the exit on Mehring Way. If you choose to stay on the course with your child and you are NOT a registered participant, please see the registration table to receive a special volunteer bib to wear.
If you are concerned about the course lay-out or arranging a meeting place, you can visit the Kids’ Marathon table in the registration area at the Expo on Friday, May 5th. Otherwise you can download our site map. You may want to drive or walk there to get a feel for the lay-out before the event date. We work very hard to set it up so that it is fun, safe and smooth sailing!
Be Smart, Eat Well, Move More and most of all Have Fun!
